How to Choose an E-Learning Authoring Tool: The Criteria That Really Matter

All tools promise the same thing. They all seem convincing in demos. The real problem: we often choose based on reputation, not on real needs. This grid starts from your concrete situations, allowing you to compare authoring tools.

1. You Prioritize Ease of Use Above All

An authoring tool is often picked up again after several weeks without using it. If getting back to speed takes longer than the creation session, the tool is abandoned, regardless of its features.

The best training tool isn't the one you learn. It's the one that becomes second nature.

Check: intuitive onboarding without prior training, 100% cloud-based, ability to import existing content without re-entry. Test the support, it's what will unlock you if needed.

2. You Need to Produce Quickly and in Volume

The real value of AI isn't generating a complete module in one click, the result is rarely usable as is. It's in accelerating each step: starting from a brief, turning a screen into a quiz, generating a voiceover without a studio.

Generating is easy. Finalizing, not. Ask yourself: at what level does AI intervene? And can it enrich, rephrase, transform, not just create?

Criteria to explore: generation from existing docs, voiceover quality, variety of pedagogical formats, quiz generation. And also video avatars, which are changing usage.

3. You Manage Multiple Brands or Languages

The hidden cost: redoing the design each time, or maintaining duplicates. A centralized design system is a graphic charter update that takes ten minutes instead of a week.

** The separation of form and content isn't a comfort feature. It's an architectural decision.**

For translation: check if it's native or via export/import. Also, check the support for RTL languages - Arabic, Hebrew - often forgotten and blocking for certain markets.

4. Your IT Department Has Questions

A point few publishers mention: post-subscription sovereignty. Some host your content on their own CDN. If you cancel, your published modules become inaccessible, even with a SCORM export.

** Ask each publisher this question: if I cancel tomorrow, will my published content remain accessible to my learners? And do I remain the owner?**

Other points: hosting in France or Europe (GDPR), on-premise for sensitive sectors, complete SCORM/CMI5/xAPI interoperability.

5. You Need to Convince Your Management

The budget decision-maker hasn't seen the demo. They evaluate the adoption risk and the implicit question: will it really change anything? Digital accessibility, traceability, and human support, not as an option, are the three arguments that weigh at this level.

A well-used tool saves more than it costs. The question isn't the license price. It's the cost of non-adoption and what helps you avoid it.
